In the South
In leafy Flanders, we are on the Cobergher circuit going through Moëres in Belgium, Hondschoote, Uxem, Ghyvelde and La Panne (Belgium). It is not just its landscape which we can admire, but also its history; through its monuments, each village has something to reveal.
  • Hondschoote its town hall, its church
  • Bergues its Belfry, its ramparts (fortifications under Louis XIV). Filming circuit for "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" www.bergues.fr
  • Flemish towns with their churches and Flanders altarpieces from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries (sculptural quality unique to France).

On the coast we have …

the west, Dunkirk, (www.ot-dunkerque.fr) which offers
  • its museums :

    • The port museum (recapturing the past and present activities of the port).
    • The museum of fine arts (Flemish School of Painting, gallery of local history …).
    • Regional Centre for Contemporary Art (collection specifically dedicated to contemporary art). Three-mast sailing ship « Duchesse Anne »
  • Its monuments :
    • Leughenaer Tower (1406), the oldest building in Dunkirk.
    • The Belfry (1440) which to begin with was attached to Saint-Eloi Church.
    • Saint-Eloi Church (1450) partly destroyed, its restoration was completed in 1985. It houses the tomb of Jean Bart (1650-1702), the most illustrious of Dunkirk corsairs to be ennobled by Louis XIV (his statue can be found on the square which bears his name). Jean-Bart statue ;
    • Three-mast sailing ship « Duchesse Anne » (1901), delivered to France in 1946 by the German navy ship school;
    • Allied Memorial (1962), commemorating the bravery of the Allied troops which took part in Operation Dynamo in May-June 1940.
  • Its port: 3rd most important port in France, consolidating the steel and petrochemical industries. A visit to Sollac, the biggest steel plant in Europe, is a must.
In the North, Bray-Dunes (France) La Mer (www.bray-dunes.fr)
  • Marked out pedestrian walkways: Under the church for the Costal Protection Agency, the dune zone has become a protected site where you can discover the flora and fauna, with Marchand Dune in Bray-Dunes being one of the links. Almost 266 species of birds and 340 plants have been identified.
In the East, the Belgian border (www.cc-flandre.fr/ghyvelde)
  • The same plan was carried out by the Nord District Council on the territory of Ghyvelde, whose acquisition concerned a strip of dunes of around 80 hectares.
